Around here the school year is the timetable. Start and end of term concentrate arrivals and departures into a rush, while speech days and exeat weekends fill roads and hotels for a few hours at a stretch. Cars are held for those dates well ahead, since waiting a long time is the alternative on the day itself. The A40 takes the load reasonably well. Approaches to the town centre do not.

Plan around the Wye itself. Running south through Tintern, the valley road is glorious and narrow, with stretches that flood after sustained rain, while lanes heading east into the Forest of Dean go single track in places with blind bends. Following a wet week we take the long way on the A40 and the A466 lower down instead of chancing standing water. Come summer, those same roads slow behind cyclists and visitors, which makes for a pleasanter sort of delay, though a delay nonetheless.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
