The school year is the local timetable. The start and end of term bring a concentrated rush of arrivals and departures, and speech days and exeat weekends fill the roads and the hotels for a few hours at a stretch. We hold cars for those dates well in advance, because the alternative on the day is a long wait. The A40 absorbs it reasonably well; the town-centre approaches do not.

The Wye itself is worth planning around. The valley road south through Tintern is glorious and narrow, with sections liable to flooding after sustained rain, and the lanes east into the Forest of Dean are single track in places with blind bends. After a wet week we go round by the A40 and the A466 lower down rather than risk standing water. In summer the same roads are slow with cyclists and visitors, which is a pleasanter kind of delay but a delay all the same.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
