The A487 south towards Porthmadog and the A4085 through Beddgelert are the two routes into the mountains, both single carriageway with long stretches where overtaking is not sensible. On a clear Saturday in summer they carry every walker in the north, the car park at Pen-y-Pass is full before eight, and the shuttle traffic below Llanberis crawls. We build that into the timing and often suggest an early start, which is pleasanter as well as quicker.

Winter brings a different set of considerations. Pen-y-Pass and the road across to Capel Curig hold snow well after the coast has cleared, and the exposed sections above Rhyd Ddu catch the wind badly. Nearer home, the Britannia Bridge is the pinch point for anything bound for Anglesey and Holyhead, and a restriction there sends everything to the older suspension bridge. We check both before an early departure.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
