The event calendar at the venue on the promenade shapes the town's year, and during a large gathering the seafront hotels fill, the parade slows and taxis become scarce in the evening. Out of season the town is quiet and everything moves at a pleasant pace.

For departures, the A55 east is the entire route and its weak points are the Conwy tunnel immediately west of here and the headland tunnels beyond. An incident at either can add an hour, and the diversion runs through Conwy's town gates, which cannot absorb it. Llandudno Junction is the station to use for through services, a few minutes away, and we meet trains there rather than at the branch terminus when time is tight.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
