The town sits in a bend of the Wye with the castle on the cliff, the racecourse in parkland behind it and England beginning at the far end of the old bridge. It has always been a crossing point and still feels like one. Racegoers come for the meetings, walkers for the Wye Valley and Offa's Dyke, and a good number of residents cross to Bristol for work each morning.
Two Severn crossings serve the town, and knowing which to use is most of the job. The M48 leaves from the doorstep at junction two, while the newer crossing further south is often quicker for Bristol and the M5. Both feel high winds. Running north, the A466 through Tintern is beautiful, narrow and slow behind traffic, and it floods in places after sustained rain.
Bristol Airport is normally forty minutes to an hour and a quarter by way of the M4, the M5 and the A38. Cardiff Airport is roughly an hour and a quarter, Bristol city centre thirty to fifty minutes, Monmouth twenty-five to thirty-five and Newport twenty to thirty. Central London is among the shorter Welsh runs at two and a quarter to three and a quarter hours.

Two Severn crossings and race days
The crossings are the local weather story. Both bridges carry speed restrictions in strong wind and can close to certain vehicles altogether, and when that happens the traffic transfers to the other one and to the A48 through Caldicot, which was never built for it. On a rough morning we leave earlier and choose the crossing on the day rather than the night before, and your chauffeur will say which he intends to use.
Race days bring their own rhythm, and the meeting between Christmas and the New Year is the one that fills the town completely. The A466 approach and the roads around the racecourse gates are slow for an hour before the first race and for a good while after the last, so we set collection points away from the main gate and agree a time that assumes the crowd rather than the card.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.
Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
