A bend of the Wye holds the town, castle up on the cliff, racecourse in parkland behind it, and England starting at the far end of the old bridge. Crossing point it has always been, and crossing point it still feels. Racegoers arrive for the meetings, walkers for the Wye Valley and Offa's Dyke, and a fair number of residents head over to Bristol for work each morning.
With two Severn crossings on offer, choosing between them is most of the job. From the doorstep at junction two runs the M48, while the newer crossing further south often serves Bristol and the M5 faster. High winds trouble both. Northward, the A466 through Tintern is a beautiful road, narrow and slow behind traffic, and it floods in places after sustained rain.
Of the Welsh runs into central London this is one of the shorter ones, two and a quarter to three and a quarter hours. Going the other way, the M4, the M5 and then the A38 will put you at Bristol Airport inside forty minutes to an hour and a quarter. Allow roughly an hour and a quarter for Cardiff Airport. Bristol city centre needs thirty to fifty minutes, Monmouth twenty-five to thirty-five, Newport twenty to thirty.

Two Severn crossings and race days
Weather here means the crossings. Speed restrictions come in on both bridges when the wind gets up, and either can shut to certain vehicles altogether, at which point everything transfers to the other one and to the A48 through Caldicot, a road never built for the load. On a rough morning we set off earlier and pick the crossing on the day rather than the night before, and your chauffeur will tell you which he means to take.
Race days bring a rhythm of their own, and the meeting between Christmas and the New Year fills the town outright. For an hour ahead of the first race, and a good while after the last, the A466 approach and the roads by the racecourse gates crawl, so collection points go away from the main gate and the time we agree assumes the crowd rather than the card.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.
Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
