Main artery of the north, the A55 has two well known chokepoints west of here: the Conwy tunnel running beneath the estuary, and the headland pair at Penmaenbach and Pen-y-Clip. Shut any one of them and the whole lot goes onto the old road through Conwy town, narrow, walled and slow. Eastwards, the Halkyn and Northop stretches thicken through the morning peak, and for an early flight we assume one of these will misbehave.

On concert and fixture nights the car parks off Abergele Road fill along with the streets around them, and once the crowd leaves the exit onto the A55 backs up for a while, so collections happen at a point agreed a few minutes away instead of at the gates. Through high summer the promenade car parks are full by ten, and the seafront road is best left alone entirely.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
