The A465 Heads of the Valleys road west towards Merthyr Tydfil has been improved in stages over many years, and the sections around Gilwern and Brynmawr can still add time without much warning. When we are heading for Cardiff we would usually take the A4042 south through Pontypool and join the M4 near Cwmbran instead, which looks longer on paper and is quicker in practice. Northbound for Brecon the A40 through Crickhowell is both the pleasant route and rarely the slow one.

Food festival weekend closes streets in the centre and fills the car parks by the middle of the morning, so we set collections a little outside the cordon and confirm the exact spot with you the day before.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
