Most useful of all to know: there is no second road. Across Anglesey the A55, then the Britannia Bridge onto the mainland, make up the only practical route, and once that bridge is restricted for high-sided vehicles in a gale, or closed outright after an incident, the whole lot funnels onto the Menai Suspension Bridge with its own limits. Ahead of a sailing or a flight in poor weather, we leave a great deal earlier than the distance suggests.

Nearer the town, roads running out to South Stack and Trearddur Bay are narrow with passing places and busy on a summer afternoon, while the climb up to the mountain car park is steep and frequently full. Trains come into Holyhead beside the terminal, so meeting one from Chester or Crewe is simple enough. Where the sailing is very early, a night close by and a short transfer usually beats a long drive through the small hours.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
