Everything here takes longer than the map suggests, because the last sixty miles are single carriageway. From the motorway's end at Pont Abraham the A48 and then the A40 run west through Carmarthen, St Clears and Haverfordwest, and behind a lorry or a caravan there is no way past for long stretches. Summer Saturdays are the worst, with holiday changeovers filling the road from mid-morning, so we plan arrivals for the afternoon or evening where we can.

For sailings, Fishguard is the nearer port at around thirty to forty minutes and Pembroke Dock about an hour, and both work to check-in deadlines rather than departure times, so we build the journey backwards from those. Locally, the lanes to Whitesands and the St Justinian's boat landing are narrow, and in high summer a park-and-ride runs for the beaches, which is usually quicker than driving in. We drop and collect instead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
