Nothing here matches what the map implies, because the final sixty miles are single carriageway. Where the motorway ends at Pont Abraham, the A48 and then the A40 carry you west through Carmarthen, St Clears and Haverfordwest, and behind a lorry or a caravan there is no way past for long stretches at a time. Summer Saturdays are worst of all, with holiday changeovers filling the road from mid-morning, so wherever we can, arrivals get planned for the afternoon or evening.

Fishguard is the nearer port for sailings, thirty to forty minutes or so, with Pembroke Dock about an hour, and since both work to check-in deadlines rather than departure times, we build the journey backwards from those. Nearer home, lanes to Whitesands and the St Justinian's boat landing are narrow, and through high summer a park-and-ride serves the beaches, generally quicker than driving in. So we drop and collect instead.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
