So much here is dictated by the Scilly connections. From the harbour goes the passenger ferry, and the heliport stands on the eastern edge of town; both keep fixed times, both want you checked in well ahead of departure, and both can be undone by weather. Collections are timed to the check-in, never to the sailing itself. Go west of Penzance and the road network shrinks in earnest. Both the A30 towards Land's End and the A3071 to St Just narrow in stretches, while the coastal lanes around Zennor, Porthcurno and Lamorna are single track, steeply graded, with hardly a passing place between them. Sea fog and Atlantic wind slow the lot further still. For a summer flight from Bristol we would set off five to five and a half hours ahead, and that is honesty rather than caution.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
