Cornwall's only genuine trunk route is the A30, and from late July onwards the changeover Saturdays send the entire county's holiday traffic along it, first one way and then back the other. Journeys stretch at Carland Cross, on the Chiverton stretch and on the approach to Bodmin. A two-hour run east turns into three without a single thing going wrong. Close to home, the A392 in from Quintrell Downs does the heavy lifting, and on hot days it queues both ways. The Watergate and Mawgan Porth road slows behind visitors hunting for a space. Surf competitions and events on Fistral shut sections of the headland roads for days on end. Flying from Bristol in high season, we would leave Newquay four to four and three quarter hours ahead. Winter asks for rather less than that.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
