Three motorway junctions serve the city, and each earns its place: 11A and 12 for anything southbound, 11 when you are heading for Cheltenham and points north. Two spots slow without fail at peak times, the A40 Golden Valley corridor and the Over roundabout west of the city. Towards Cirencester and the M4, the constraint is the A417 climbing Crickley Hill. Which junction we take is decided by direction, never by habit alone.

Timing round here has its oddities. A match evening at Kingsholm blocks Kingsholm Road and the Black Dog Way well past the final whistle. On the biggest tides the Severn Bore draws crowds down to Minsterworth and the riverside lanes, and parked cars line those narrow roads for an hour on either side of it. Leaving early for Bristol, we would normally pull out of Gloucester about two hours ahead, and rather more once the M5 has summer traffic on it.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
