Through services from London and the sleeper both call at Truro station, which makes it the natural handover between rail and road for the whole of west Cornwall. The forecourt is small and the approach off Station Road narrow, so we meet at an agreed point close by instead of adding to the crush. From there, Falmouth, the Roseland, St Agnes and the north coast all sit within about half an hour to forty minutes.

One trunk road serves the county, the A30, and everything hangs on it. Holiday traffic piles up on the Chiverton and Carland Cross sections and over Bodmin Moor, with summer Saturdays worse than anything else by a clear margin. Events at the Royal Cornwall Showground near Wadebridge, and the festival weekends, pile more on top. For a flight from Bristol in season we would leave Truro four to four and a half hours ahead.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
