Christchurch has a summer problem it wears politely: the A35 through the town and the roads down to Mudeford and Friars Cliff carry beach traffic all day from June onwards, and the bypass does not spare the local turnings. Regatta and carnival weekends compress it further. We plan collections from the landward side of the bottleneck rather than the quay itself, which frequently turns a fifteen-minute crawl into a five-minute walk to a car already waiting.

Going east, the A337 and the forest roads are lovely and slow. Ponies have right of way in practice as well as in principle, the speed limits are low and properly enforced, and a journey from Lymington or Beaulieu takes longer than any map allows. For an early Southampton flight we leave before the M27 tightens, generally by half past five for a departure around eight, and we would add to that on a Friday in high season.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
