Between Cirencester and Gloucester the A417 climbs the escarpment, and the stretch around the Air Balloon has been the pinch point on that whole route for years, with a major scheme reworking it more recently. Northbound journeys are better quoted as a range than as a single figure. We check how the road stands at the moment before we fix any departure time. Towards Swindon the A419 is dual and quick, which generally makes it the better spine for anything travelling east.

Summer applies a pressure of its own. Polo afternoons and events at Cirencester Park pack the Tetbury Road and the park approaches; July brings the Royal International Air Tattoo at Fairford, which loads the A417 and the Lechlade roads heavily; and on fine weekends the Fosse Way north to Stow crawls along behind coaches. On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
