Timber frames in black and white line Hospital Street, a handsome church holds the middle, and a river slides past the edge of things, all of which leaves Nantwich feeling like a town that has never once been in a rush. Its year runs on rural time: the agricultural show, the food festival, the dairy country all around. Residents go with us to airports, wedding parties out to the country houses close by, and visitors back to whichever village along the Weaver they are staying in.
Compact is the word for the old centre, and the streets around the square are tight with access restricted, which is exactly why they survive in the state they do. Beam Street, Welsh Row or a spot by the Civic Hall serve as our set-down points; the square itself we leave alone. Follow the lanes towards Wrenbury, Audlem and Acton and you meet single-track sections, blind bends and no lighting at all, so any wedding venue approach gets looked at in daylight first.
Allow 45 to 70 minutes for Manchester Airport on the M6 and M56, with Birmingham about the same going the other way. Crewe station is ten minutes off, and when the road looks slow it remains far and away the fastest way to London. Chester takes 30 to 45 minutes, Shrewsbury roughly the hour, and the Peak District sits a little over an hour east, which makes a good day out.

Lanes, show days and junction 16
Far enough from the motorway for quiet, near enough to lean on it: that is the position Nantwich occupies. Junction 16 of the M6 is about fifteen minutes away along the A500, and it backs up both ways at peak times, while the Cheshire section beyond ranks among the least dependable anywhere in the country. Airport departures therefore get a proper margin. Should the motorway seize up altogether, the A51 and A54 offer a slow but real way round, not a line on a map.
North of the town lies the show ground, home to the agricultural show and to other big summer gatherings, and on those dates the A51 and A530 approaches carry far heavier traffic than normal from early in the morning onwards. For one weekend the food festival shuts streets in the centre. Outside all that, it is the lanes that give trouble: hedged in, unlit, frequently only one vehicle wide, with tractors and trailers about in spring and autumn. Getting to a country venue means planning a route, not trusting a postcode.
