Summer Saturdays rearrange the town completely. The Links goes first, then Marine Avenue, and by early afternoon the promenade is less a road than a slow procession. Being set down at the door and picked up at an agreed hour sidesteps the whole business, and it counts for even more in the evening, when the restaurants along Park View and the bars around the dome all empty at much the same time. Bank holiday weekends behave like summer, whatever the weather happens to be doing.

Most of what we do here is early flights, and they begin at an hour when the Metro is no help at all if you are carrying luggage. Allow thirty-five to fifty minutes across to the airport, longer again when the Tyne crossings are slow. From this coast London by road runs five and a quarter to six and a quarter hours, and we would sooner lay that arithmetic out plainly, and propose an overnight, than agree to a return trip nobody enjoys.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
