Summer Saturdays reshape the town. The Links fills first, then Marine Avenue, and by early afternoon the promenade is a slow procession rather than a road. Being set down at the door and collected at an agreed time avoids all of it, and it matters more for evening bookings, when the restaurants along Park View and the bars around the dome turn out at similar hours. Bank holiday weekends behave like summer whatever the weather is doing.

Early flights are the bulk of our work here, and they start before the Metro is any use with luggage. Allow thirty-five to fifty minutes to the airport, longer if the Tyne crossings are slow. London by road is five and a quarter to six and a quarter hours from this coast, and we would rather set out that arithmetic plainly, and suggest an overnight, than agree to a return trip nobody enjoys.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
