One compact terminal sits at Speke on the north bank of the Mersey, reached along the A561 from the city or from the M62 and M57 further out. The scale is the point. You can go from kerb to check-in in a couple of minutes, and arrivals opens more or less directly onto the front of the building. Nothing here involves a shuttle bus or a long walk with cases.

Departures rarely need a long lead time from the city, but the A561 through Garston and the dock road slows in the evening rush, and the M62 approach can be worse still. We set collection times to the hour of day rather than to a rule. If you are travelling from Cheshire or North Wales, we allow properly for the tunnels and the bridges rather than hoping they behave.

The building is one of the smaller terminals in regular use, and that shapes everything. Bags on a short European sector often appear quickly, so the walk from the doors to the car can be a matter of minutes rather than the half hour a big hub demands. Your chauffeur stands in the arrivals hall with a name board, and if reclaim is slow, a message is enough for us to simply keep waiting.
Set-down in front of the terminal is intended for a quick handover and is enforced as such, which suits departures perfectly well: the boot opens, the cases come out, and you are inside. Getting there is the variable. The A561 dock road carries the evening rush from Garston, the M62 at junction 6 backs up towards Tarbock, and anyone coming from Chester or the Wirral has a crossing to negotiate first.
Route choice from this terminal matters more than distance. Chester and North Wales run out along the M56 and A55; the Lake District is a straight motorway pull north; London is a long day by road, and worth doing by car mainly when the luggage or the timing makes rail awkward. First departures build from around five, when the dock road is empty and the whole journey collapses to twenty minutes.
