At Speke, on the north bank of the Mersey, one compact terminal does the whole job on its own, reached along the A561 out of the city or from the M62 and M57 further afield. Scale is the whole point. Kerb to check-in takes a couple of minutes, and arrivals opens more or less onto the front of the building. No shuttle bus here, and no long walk dragging cases behind you.

Chester and North Wales lie out along the M56 and A55; the Lake District is a straight pull north on motorway; London makes a long day of it by road, worth driving mainly when luggage or timing turns rail into a nuisance.
