Being this near the airport works both ways. The A538 skirts the perimeter and gets you from Wilmslow to the terminals faster than anything else, yet it also carries every car park shuttle and every drop-off in the district, and at peak hours it bogs down at the Ringway junction and around the tunnel entrances. Junction 6 of the M56 stands as the alternative, generally the cleaner of the two. Catch a very early flight and the A538 is deserted, with the run sometimes under fifteen minutes.

The town's other artery is the A34, heading north for the M60 and south past Alderley Edge, and it fills properly in both peaks, with the junctions at Handforth and Prestbury the slowest links in the chain. Most Stockport-bound traffic has shifted onto the A555 relief road and away from the town centre. When Manchester has a match on, the crowd loads both the A34 and the M60, and we add half an hour instead of arguing with it.
