Proximity to the airport cuts both ways. The A538 runs past the perimeter and is the quickest route from Wilmslow to the terminals, but it also carries every car park shuttle and drop-off in the area, and it slows at the Ringway junction and around the tunnel entrances at peak times. Junction 6 of the M56 is the alternative and is usually cleaner. For a very early flight the A538 is empty and the journey can be under fifteen minutes.

The A34 is the town's other artery, running north towards the M60 and south past Alderley Edge, and it is genuinely busy through both peaks with the Handforth and Prestbury junctions the slowest points. The A555 relief road now takes much of the Stockport-bound traffic away from the town centre. On a Manchester matchday the A34 and M60 both carry the crowd, and we allow an extra half hour rather than argue with it.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
