June and Royal Ascot form the fixed point of the local year. From mid-morning the A329, the A330 and the roads over Ascot Heath carry very heavy traffic; dress code and enclosure entrances dictate where a car is allowed to set down; and after the last race the exit crawls for well over an hour. We agree the drop-off gate beforehand, keep the car well away from the course, and collect from a point that never requires crossing the main flow of departing traffic.

Late May brings the championship week at Wentworth, which does much the same to the A30 and the Virginia Water approaches, complete with temporary parking arrangements and marshalled entrances. Outside those weeks the A30 through Sunningdale and Egham slows from about eight in the morning and once more from four, while junction thirteen of the M25 provides the usual bottleneck. Ahead of an early Heathrow flight we would suggest going about two and a half to three hours before.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
