Royal Ascot in June is the fixed point of the local year. The A329, A330 and the roads across Ascot Heath carry very heavy traffic from mid-morning, dress code and enclosure entrances dictate where a car may set down, and the exit after the last race is slow for well over an hour. We agree the drop-off gate beforehand, hold the car away from the course, and collect from a point that does not involve crossing the main flow of departing traffic.

The championship week at Wentworth in late May does something similar to the A30 and the Virginia Water approaches, with temporary parking arrangements and marshalled entrances. Outside those weeks, the A30 through Sunningdale and Egham slows from around eight in the morning and again from four, and the M25 at junction thirteen is the usual bottleneck. For an early Heathrow flight we would suggest leaving about two and a half to three hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
