Most of the work falls to the A2 and M2, with junction one at Strood and junctions three and four sitting either side of the Medway towns. Over Blue Bell Hill, the A229 ties the M2 to the M20 at Maidstone and is the way we go for Gatwick, though northbound in the morning peak it genuinely crawls, and it shuts readily after an incident. Between Chatham and Strood the A289 and the Medway Tunnel make the shortcut, but the tunnel carries vehicle restrictions, so anything unusual gets checked before we route it through.

Event days at the Historic Dockyard, and the Dickens weekends over at Rochester, shut streets and fill car parks across both towns, while the Dockside outlet piles Saturday traffic onto the same approach roads. Between the river and the Great Lines the hills leave several residential streets steep and narrow with cars parked either side, so we agree a collection point at the nearest wide junction. Head for Bluebell Hill and the villages past it and the lanes turn unlit and easy to miss.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
