The A2 and M2 do most of the work here, with junction one at Strood and junctions three and four either side of the Medway towns. The A229 over Blue Bell Hill links the M2 to the M20 at Maidstone and is the route for Gatwick, and it is genuinely slow northbound in the morning peak and prone to closures after incidents. The A289 and the Medway Tunnel shortcut between Chatham and Strood, and the tunnel has vehicle restrictions, so we check before routing anything unusual through it.

The hills between the river and the Great Lines mean several residential streets are steep and narrow with parking on both sides, so we agree a collection point at the nearest wide junction. For Bluebell Hill and the villages beyond, the lanes are unlit and easy to miss.
