The fact that catches most drivers out is the bridge. Eton and Windsor face each other across a crossing open only to pedestrians and cyclists, and the road route between them goes round by the A332, so a collection on the wrong bank costs time you may not have. We ask which side you are actually on. Eton High Street has restricted access and very limited waiting, and on college occasions the whole village fills, when an early arrival is the only sensible plan.

Royal Ascot week in June and the horse show in May both put heavy traffic on the A332 and the roads around Windsor Great Park, and the M4 between junctions five and six is the pinch point for anything Heathrow bound at those times. The Fourth of June and school half terms fill the Eton approaches from mid morning onwards. On those days we set off earlier and use the Slough side rather than the Windsor bypass.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
