Among Scottish towns, Stirling is one of the very few whose historic core is genuinely difficult in a car. Climbing towards the castle esplanade, the route squeezes through the Old Town over cobbles and round tight corners with next to nowhere to wait, and in season coach movements at the top can seal it off completely. What works is a set-down at an agreed point, the car held further down, and a call from you when you have finished. That way the steepest part of the visit belongs to somebody else.

Heading west, the A84 through Doune to Callander opens the Trossachs and the Duke's Pass, and on a fine weekend or a holiday Monday it fills with day traffic out of both cities. Past Callander the roads tighten and the timings stretch in a hurry, so a Trossachs day gets planned as a leisurely one and never as a dash. Come winter, the higher ground towards Aberfoyle and the pass keeps its ice long after the carse below has cleared, and routing takes account of that.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
