The M77 dual carriageway is what ties Kilmarnock to Glasgow, and it runs well outside the morning and evening peaks, when the northbound approach to the city and the Fenwick Moor stretch both slow. That section sits high enough to catch weather the coast never sees, with fog and occasional snow when Ayrshire itself is clear. For anything time-critical into Glasgow we set off earlier rather than trusting a clear run, and the A77 through Fenwick is the fallback when the motorway stops.

East of the town the A71 and the Irvine Valley road serve Galston, Newmilns and Darvel before climbing towards Strathaven and the Lanarkshire moors. It is a pleasant drive and a slow one, narrow through the villages with farm traffic in season and few places to overtake. Kilmarnock station is a useful railhead on the line between Glasgow and Carlisle by Dumfries, and a car meeting the train removes the part of the journey that is hardest to arrange locally.
