Since the Aberdeen Western Peripheral Route opened, a great deal of through traffic has come off Anderson Drive, and anyone arriving from the south now finds it the quieter way round to the north side of the city. It is an exposed piece of road, though. Crosswinds on the higher sections reward a steady hand rather than a brave one. Nearer the middle of town, the approach to the harbour and ferry terminal can stop dead while a sailing loads, which means a collection there is timed against the boat and not against the clock.

Head west and the A93 tightens with every mile it climbs up Deeside. Past Ballater, the road towards Braemar and the Cairnwell is among the first in Scotland to shut once snow arrives. Estate driveways out here can run a mile or more without a lamp and with barely a passing place, so an evening arrival is worth agreeing with the house beforehand. Midwinter daylight is gone by the middle of the afternoon, and departure times ought to be set with that in mind.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
