The A9 south of Aviemore climbs to the Pass of Drumochter, and that stretch is genuinely weather-affected between November and March: snow, standing water and lorries on the single-carriageway sections all slow it, and the pass has closed outright in the worst of it. Average speed enforcement runs along much of the route and the ongoing dualling work moves contraflows around from season to season, so a run that took two hours in June can honestly take three in February without anything having gone wrong.

Locally, the B970 through Inshriach and Nethy Bridge is the pretty way between the villages, but it is narrow, unlit and slow after dark, so we route by the A95 when time matters. The Coire Cas road up to the Cairngorm car parks holds ice long after the glen has thawed, and there is nowhere to turn a large car at the top on a busy morning. Where an itinerary depends on that road, we agree a fallback before setting out.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
