Hamilton sits directly on the M74 between junctions five and six, which is what makes it so straightforward for anything heading north to Glasgow or south towards Carlisle. The motorway is at its busiest on Friday afternoons and on the approach to the Raith interchange in the morning, and the older A723 and A725 through the towns are the fallback when it stops. Because Hamilton, Motherwell, Bothwell and Blantyre run into each other, a journey that looks like four separate places is usually one short drive.
