Sitting right on the M74 between junctions five and six is what makes Hamilton so easy to work with, for anything running north to Glasgow or south towards Carlisle. Friday afternoons load the motorway heavily, as does the morning approach to the Raith interchange, and when it stops altogether the older A723 and A725 through the towns become the fallback. Hamilton, Motherwell, Bothwell and Blantyre all run into one another, so a trip that reads on paper as four separate places usually amounts to one short drive.

The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
