Everything heading west uses the A75, and it takes the freight running between the Cairnryan ferries and the M6. Most of its length is single carriageway with occasional overtaking stretches, and once a slow lorry is out in front the whole road drops to that speed. Sailings bunch the traffic together, so a Stranraer run that flows in the middle of the morning can be markedly heavier an hour afterwards. Westbound journeys get planned around that pattern rather than in defiance of it.

Travelling by rail, Lockerbie is the stop that earns its keep on the West Coast Main Line, roughly twenty-five to thirty-five minutes from Dumfries, and plenty of guests find the London train from there quicker than changing at Glasgow. Dumfries has its own station on the Kilmarnock and Carlisle line, though the service is thinner. Either way, a car waiting on the platform takes the awkwardness out of the arrival, since taxis at both stations are not something to count on late in the evening.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
