Oddly enough, the station that works best for Glenrothes stands outside it. Markinch, five to ten minutes to the north east, sits on the main Fife line and takes the useful services towards Edinburgh and Dundee, whereas the stop called Glenrothes with Thornton lies away to the south west on a different route with a thinner pattern of trains. Book on the name alone and you will land at the wrong platform, as guests regularly do. So we ask which service you are travelling on and meet that one. On the road, the A92 forms the spine linking Kirkcaldy, Glenrothes and the Tay. Between the roundabouts it is quick; at them, decidedly not. Prettier options exist in the A911 through Leslie and the A914 heading for Cupar, both single carriageway and both carrying farm traffic when the season demands it. Airport runs normally take the A92 onto the M90 and over the Queensferry Crossing, and when high wind puts restrictions on that crossing the way round by Kincardine adds a good half hour.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road.
