Where Falkirk sits on the motorway network accounts for pretty much everything practical about the place. Eastwards the M9 heads for Edinburgh; the M876 and M80 take you west and north for Glasgow and Stirling; and the A9 slips through the middle of town as a perfectly ordinary road, not the Highland trunk route that number leads people to expect. Queues at the junctions on the eastern side start forming around half past seven. When either motorway has an incident, the lot gets pushed onto the A803 through Camelon, and it copes badly.

Enough travellers get caught out by the two stations that it deserves saying plainly. Down in the low part of town, Falkirk Grahamston takes the Edinburgh to Glasgow services routed by Cumbernauld along with the Stirling line, while Falkirk High stands up the hill on the main Edinburgh to Glasgow route by Polmont. On foot they are roughly a mile apart, and further again by car. Walking between the two with luggage is not something to attempt when you are pressed. So we ask which service you are on before the day arrives.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
