The A127 Southend Arterial is the road that matters, running from the seafront out past Rayleigh and Basildon to the M25 at junction 29. The Fairglen interchange, where it meets the A130, is the recurring bottleneck, and westbound mornings queue well before eight. The A13 through Hadleigh and Stanford-le-Hope is the alternative, slower but steadier when the arterial is blocked, and it also feeds Thurrock and the crossing to Kent.

In summer the seafront changes the town completely. Warm weekends and the larger events on the front fill Marine Parade, Eastern Esplanade and the roads down from the cliffs, and afternoon traffic leaving town can take an hour to clear. Anyone flying out on a Saturday in July or August should plan to be clear of the seafront early. Southend Airport at Rochford sits close by for its own flights, though for the wider network we usually run to Stansted.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
