One road matters above the rest: the A127 Southend Arterial, which leaves the seafront and runs out past Rayleigh and Basildon to meet the M25 at junction 29. Fairglen interchange, where the A130 comes in, is the bottleneck that keeps recurring, and a westbound morning queues there well before eight. Failing that, the A13 through Hadleigh and Stanford-le-Hope is slower but steadier when the arterial is blocked, and it feeds Thurrock and the crossing into Kent besides.

Summer turns the town into something else entirely, and the seafront does it. A warm weekend, or one of the larger events on the front, fills Marine Parade, Eastern Esplanade and every road coming down off the cliffs, and the afternoon exodus can take a full hour to clear. Flying out on a Saturday in July or August? Plan to be clear of the seafront early. Southend Airport at Rochford is close at hand for its own flights, though for the wider network we generally run to Stansted.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
