The A14 is the road that matters and it is a working freight route above all else, with heavy lorry traffic running between Felixstowe and the Midlands. Junctions 42 to 44 serve the town, and the westbound stretch past Newmarket slows whenever there is an incident, since realistic alternatives are few.
