Junction 7 of the M11 serves as Epping's front door. Morning delay gathers precisely there, on the roundabout and along the A414 running towards Harlow, and it gathers early. Junction 7a, the newer one north of the town, has drawn some traffic away from that Harlow approach, and we'll take it when the destination is the science park or somewhere in the Stort valley. Go southbound instead and the M11 hands over to the M25 at Junction 6, an interchange that slows without fail from about half past six.

Come Tuesday, market day empties the High Street of parking from first thing until mid-afternoon, which pushes every collection onto the side streets. South towards Loughton, the B1393 and the forest roads are lovely to look at and slow to drive, with deer stepping out at dusk and cyclists in numbers at weekends. Nobody should mistake them for a bypass, and we don't. Chasing the first flight from Stansted, a departure before six shrinks a forty-minute run to a twenty-five-minute one.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
