Almost everything from here goes through Junction 5 of the M11 at Loughton, a two-minute drive on a Sunday and a fifteen-minute one on a Tuesday morning. Climbing north through the forest, the A121 Epping New Road is the pleasant way and the one we choose outside peak hours. The A104 Woodford New Road up to the Charlie Brown's roundabout is quicker on paper and a good deal slower between four and seven in the afternoon.

After dark the forest roads deserve respect. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
