Junction 28, where the M25 meets the A12, is the single most consequential piece of road for anyone travelling from Brentwood. It has long been a known bottleneck and the works to rebuild it have made timings less predictable rather than more, so we plan around it instead of through it. Anticlockwise towards the Dartford crossing is worst from mid-afternoon; clockwise towards the M11 is usually the better bet for a northbound airport run.

In town, the Wilson's Corner junction and Kings Road carry most of the local movement and slow considerably at school times. The A12 eastbound out towards Ingatestone and Mountnessing is reliable except when an incident closes it, at which point the A128 and the Blackmore lanes become the only realistic diversion and everybody uses them. For an early flight we tend to leave before six, when all of this is simply a clear road.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
