Two M11 junctions serve the town, and picking the right one counts for more here than the mileage does. Junction 8 is the airport and A120 junction, which clogs with terminal traffic and the retail park. Junction 8a at Bishop's Stortford North is frequently the quieter way in and out. It is the A120 roundabouts on either side of Junction 8 that turn a ten-minute run into a twenty-five-minute one, worst of all through the mid-morning departure bank.

Arrivals are met inside the terminal rather than out in the short-stay car park, with the collection set around the published arrival time and moved if the schedule shifts. Going south on the M11 towards London, the dependable problem is Junction 6 at the M25, which slows from about half past six in the morning.
