Most local journeys here depend on a single road, the A217, which climbs to junction eight at the top of Reigate Hill. From about half past seven in the morning it slows, and again between four and six in the afternoon, while any closure on the M25 between junctions seven and nine drives heavy traffic straight down into the town. When that happens we drop east to Redhill and take the A23 instead: longer in miles, and almost always shorter in minutes.

Short closures come with the farmers market and the seasonal events held around the High Street and Priory Park, usually on a weekend morning. Cycling events on Reigate Hill and out towards Box Hill shut roads across the Downs on certain summer Sundays. Ahead of a morning flight from Gatwick, our usual suggestion is leaving Reigate about two and a half to three hours before, with the allowance made for the hill rather than the motorway.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Those allowances go into the timings from the start, rather than being discovered together halfway up a glen. Where a departure hour makes the schedule uncomfortable, we propose a better one.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
