Junction eight sits at the top of Reigate Hill, and the A217 climbing to it is the single road most local journeys depend upon. It slows from around half past seven in the morning and again between four and six, and any closure on the M25 between junctions seven and nine pushes heavy traffic down into the town. When that happens we drop east to Redhill and use the A23 instead, which is longer in miles and almost always shorter in minutes.

The town holds a farmers market and seasonal events around the High Street and Priory Park that bring short closures, generally on weekend mornings. Cycling events on Reigate Hill and towards Box Hill shut roads across the Downs on certain summer Sundays. For a morning flight from Gatwick we would ordinarily suggest leaving Reigate about two and a half to three hours ahead, allowing for the hill rather than the motorway itself.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
