At the foot of Reigate Hill the M25 and M23 come together at junction eight, and nothing for miles around is busier. Through the morning, clockwise M25 traffic queues towards it all the way from Leatherhead; in the evening the anticlockwise carriageway takes its turn. When it is heavy, the sensible route to Gatwick runs down the A23 through Salfords and Horley, a few minutes longer but free of the interchange altogether.
