Castle Street climbs from the Borough towards the castle in a broad sweep of red brick, and the town below it is full of independent shops, galleries and restaurants that draw people from three counties. The Wey rises nearby, Frensham Ponds and Hankley Common lie to the south, and the Hampshire border is minutes away. Guests come for weekends in the country hotels, for the arts events at the university, and for the sort of dinner that is much better without a designated driver.
The A31 Farnham bypass takes the through traffic, which is a mercy, but the town's own gyratory around South Street and East Street still bunches at the wrong hours. Castle Street has parking down the middle and no room to wait, so we set down at the Borough end and park properly. Out of town, the lanes towards Tilford, Elstead and Frensham are narrow, wooded and unlit, and several of the better addresses have gravel drives with very limited turning space.
Heathrow is usually forty minutes to an hour by the A31 and the M3 from junction four, with the M25 stretch the variable part. Gatwick runs an hour to an hour and twenty. Central London is an hour and a quarter to an hour and three quarters, Guildford twenty to thirty minutes along the A31, and Winchester, Chichester and the South Downs each within the hour when the roads are kind.

The A31 and the Hog's Back
The A31 east from Farnham climbs the Hog's Back towards Guildford, a fast open ridge road that is genuinely exposed in weather and slow when the Guildford end backs up. West towards Alton it becomes the route to the M3 at junction four and the practical airport road. The Hindhead Tunnel on the A3 south has made the run to the coast far more predictable than it once was, and it is now the sensible way towards Chichester and Goodwood.
Farnham's own bottleneck is the Wagon Yard and South Street area on a market Thursday and on Saturday mornings, when the Borough is busy from ten. Evening collections from Castle Street restaurants are simple when the set down point is agreed beforehand and awkward when it is not. Country addresses towards Frensham, Tilford and Churt sit down single track lanes with passing places rather than verges, so we confirm the approach and the turning arrangement before the day.

We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it.
