The A627(M) is a short motorway spur linking Oldham to both the M60 and the M62, and it is the fastest way out of the town in almost every direction. Its junction with the M62 at Chadderton is where the delays begin, particularly westbound in the morning. The M60 between junctions 18 and 22 is one of the busiest orbital stretches in the country, and for an airport run we would rather leave half an hour early than gamble on finding it clear.

Saddleworth changes the rules entirely. The A62 over Standedge and the A670 through the villages are steep, narrow and exposed, and they take snow earlier and hold it longer than anywhere else in Greater Manchester. The Whit Friday brass band contests fill Uppermill, Delph and Dobcross for an entire evening, with roads closed and parking impossible for miles around. On those nights we set down well outside the villages and agree the walk in advance.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
