In and out, the Thanet Way is the only sensible spine, and it is a mixed road: dual carriageway for most of its length, yet with junctions that queue badly at Whitstable and around the Brenley Corner interchange where it meets the M2 and the A2. Summer Friday afternoons are the worst of it, and coming back on a Sunday evening the traffic backs up from Faversham. Block the A299 and the alternative through Canterbury on the A28 is slow going, so what we usually build in is a margin rather than a diversion.

Within the town, seafront parking has effectively gone by mid-morning on any warm day, and during events the harbour arm shuts to vehicles altogether. Openings at Turner Contemporary and the summer festivals bring temporary closures around the Rendezvous and Marine Drive. Before an early flight from any London airport, our general advice is to leave Margate about four hours ahead, and rather more when the Dartford crossing forms part of that morning's route.

Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
