Locally, no road matters more than the A256 between Ramsgate and Sandwich. Port traffic uses it, it runs past the science park at Discovery Park, and it slows at the Cliffsend and Sandwich roundabouts, above all when something large is happening at the golf links. During a championship year the entire corridor is best treated as unpredictable for the week, so we collect from an agreed point outside the closures rather than trying the immediate approach roads.

Within the town, summer festivals and Sunday markets close the Royal Harbour parade, and the ramp up Madeira Walk drops to single file whenever it is busy. A cruise call at the port puts coach traffic on the eastern approach for a morning. Before a flight from any London airport we would ordinarily suggest leaving Ramsgate about four hours ahead, with allowance made for the Dartford crossing or the Blackwall tunnel, whichever the route needs.

The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
