The M20 is both the town's great asset and its one real vulnerability. When cross-Channel traffic is disrupted, contraflow arrangements can be put in place on the coastbound carriageway and journey times through junctions seven and eight become very hard to predict. On those days we route towards London by the A20 and M26 instead, or drop south to the A21. Junction six at the Coldharbour roundabout is the other reliable delay, particularly northbound onto the A229 towards the M2.

Leeds Castle sits directly off junction eight and its concert and firework evenings empty onto a single roundabout, which is worth an extra half hour on the return. The town market and the riverside events bring closures around Fairmeadow and Barker Road on their days, and the county show at Detling in July puts sustained pressure on the A249. For a morning flight out of Gatwick we generally suggest leaving Maidstone about three and a half hours ahead.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
