When a major championship comes to the Old Course the town changes entirely for the week. Park-and-ride arrangements come into force, roads near the links are closed or restricted, and pedestrian numbers make the centre slow at any hour. The arrangements are published shortly beforehand and differ from one championship to the next, so we check them for your dates rather than assuming the previous pattern still holds. Graduation weeks and the start of term have a milder version of the same effect on hotel access.

Day to day, Leuchars is the practical railhead and sits on the main line between Edinburgh and Dundee, ten to fifteen minutes from the centre. The A91 west to the M90 is the airport route and runs well apart from the Forth crossing, which can be restricted in high winds and push traffic round by Kincardine. Southward the A917 through Kingsbarns, Crail and Anstruther is single carriageway and narrow through the villages, beautiful in summer and slower than the mileage suggests.

Britain's weather does more to a long journey than its traffic does. Winter afternoons close in early, which matters when the last leg is a single-track road, and Highland and moorland routes can take substantially longer than a summer estimate suggests. We build that into the timings rather than discovering it together, and where a departure hour makes a schedule uncomfortable we will suggest a better one.

Demand follows the calendar. Bank holiday weekends, the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and the university terms that begin and end together all fill quickly, and the further from London a journey runs, the earlier a car should be committed to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
