Park-and-ride schemes come into force, roads near the links close or go under restriction, and the sheer weight of people on foot slows the centre at any hour of the day. On an ordinary day, Leuchars does the work as railhead, sitting on the main line between Edinburgh and Dundee ten to fifteen minutes from the centre. Running west to the M90, the A91 is the airport route and behaves itself apart from the Forth crossing, which high winds can restrict and shunt traffic round by Kincardine. Going south, the A917 through Kingsbarns, Crail and Anstruther is single carriageway and pinches through each village: beautiful in summer, and slower than the mileage lets on.

On a long journey, Britain's weather does more damage than its traffic ever will. Winter afternoons close in early, and that matters a great deal when the final leg is a single-track road. Highland and moorland routes can run substantially longer than any summer estimate suggests. Demand tracks the calendar closely. Bank holiday weekends fill fast, so do the weeks either side of Christmas, the summer wedding season and those university terms that all begin and end together. The further from London a journey runs, the sooner a car wants committing to it. Midweek travel in the shoulder months, by contrast, is the easiest thing in the world to arrange.
