The Championships take a fortnight, running out of the end of June and into July. Outside courts get going late morning; show courts follow an hour or so behind. What a day ticket buys is an unpredictable quantity of tennis. Two straight-sets matches and you are done by mid-afternoon. One five-setter under the roof and you are still in your seat at half past ten at night. Then add queuing, strawberries, rain and a great deal of walking between courts.

For the duration, SW19 turns into a residential grid under controlled parking, with police and stewards managing the roads immediately around the grounds. Drive yourself and you either leave the car a long way out and walk up the hill, or pay for a space you might still need twelve hours later. A chauffeur sets you down at an agreed corner within a short walk of the gates, waits nearby, and comes back when you message, be that four in the afternoon or nearly midnight.

Allow yourself considerably more time than any map suggests. The A3, plus the roads running through Putney and Southfields, carry the entire tournament, and the arrival hour is genuinely slow going. Rain delays shove everything backwards, so treat the return as a window rather than a time. Planning dinner in town afterwards? Say so in advance and we hold the car instead of releasing it, because the gap between the last point and a table in Mayfair is narrower than you would think.

An S-Class carries two people comfortably, with room left over for coats, hats and the shopping that inevitably follows you out of the grounds. A family of five or six does better in a V-Class, especially on a hot day, when a cool cabin waiting for you at the finish matters more than it ought to. Corporate groups get vehicles run in convoy on matched timings, so everybody leaves together and not in instalments.
