Junctions 23A and 24 of the M1 leave the terminal a couple of miles off the motorway, while the A42 feeds in traffic from the south and the west. Out of Derby, Nottingham or Leicester the drive usually finishes well inside three quarters of an hour. Being that central makes the airport easy to reach, and just as easy to set off for slightly too late.
Short as the run always is, we still collect with a proper margin, because freight dominates the M1 along this stretch and it slows with almost no warning. Your chauffeur is there before the agreed time, loads the cases and sets you down at the drop-off beside the single terminal, from where the walk to the check-in desks inside the building is short and unhurried.

Junction 23A brings you down from the north, junction 24 up from the south and off the A50, while the A42 carries traffic across from the M42 and the West Midlands. One incident on the M1 tips the whole lot onto those A-roads at once.
Through the night this airport works hard as a freight base, and that is why arrivals and departures at unsociable hours feel ordinary here rather than exceptional. It suits the holiday flights coming in before dawn, and at that hour the roads make the drive to Nottingham, Derby or Stamford faster than at any other point in the day. Longer runs south to Heathrow, or west to Birmingham, count as regular work whenever the route you want is not flown from here.
