Most people meet London through a window that will not open. Give the day over to a private car and the whole shape of it changes. You walk the length of the Mall; the car waits. You come out of St Paul's and it is there again, warm, coats and shopping still in the boot. Across the river you go, with no queue, no ticket barrier, no standing about in the rain. And you carry on long past the point at which a walking day would have finished your legs.
Mornings tend to start in Westminster, the light still low, the pavements still quiet: Parliament Square, the Abbey, that long view down Whitehall. The route then swings to Buckingham Palace and the edge of St James's Park before running east into the City, past the Bank crossroads, up to St Paul's. After that come the Tower and Tower Bridge. From the south bank you get the view back along the river, and it is the one nearly everybody photographs.
Afternoon is when a day like this earns itself. An hour in a gallery, perhaps. Or over to Kensington for the museums and Hyde Park, a wander through Notting Hill, or simply the request to be dropped somewhere good for lunch with time enough to enjoy it. Nothing is fixed. Your chauffeur holds the plan loosely and rebuilds it around whatever you decide at eleven o'clock, and no coach or fixed itinerary will ever hand you that.

What a London Day Actually Holds
Three substantial stops and two short ones is what a realistic full day holds. The Tower on its own swallows two and a half hours, and the British Museum will take however much you give it. From April to September the light lasts until nine, which buys you one more stop. Come December the good photographic light has gone by half past three, so we load the outdoor sights into the morning and save the galleries for later.
Admission is yours to arrange, and whichever slot you hold becomes the hinge the whole route turns on. Give us your Tower or Westminster Abbey time and the morning gets built backwards from it, since a ten o'clock entry and a two o'clock entry make for entirely different days. Where two timed slots sit too close together we will tell you plainly, and propose the order that has you walking downhill instead of straight across the city.
Hardly anywhere in central London lets a car wait at the door. Your chauffeur works from agreed set-down points a few minutes' walk off and holds close by, so one message brings the car round. Across a full day expect three or four miles on foot, most of it flat. If rain sets in we reorder: the museums, the Abbey and the covered arcades all move forward. May, June and September treat you best: long light, gardens at their peak, and pavements not yet packed to August density. July and August bring the crowds and the school holidays, which makes an early start matter far more. Winter makes its own case. Bare trees open the views up, the galleries stay calm, and the Regent Street lights are genuinely worth an evening loop.
For most dates, two to three weeks ahead is comfortable. Half terms fill earliest, along with the fortnight either side of Christmas and summer Saturdays, and when families travel the larger vehicles go first. Midweek, short notice is often possible. Timed admission slots are released long before anyone thinks to ring us, so secure those first and we will build the day round whatever you managed to get.
