Bath is a little over two hours west of London, which makes it a long day but a rewarding one, and the drive itself is part of it — the M4 gives way to the Wiltshire downs and then to the steep wooded approach into the valley. Coming in by car lets you take the high road for the view over the rooftops before descending, which is a small thing and a memorable one.
The Roman Baths sit at the centre of everything and deserve a couple of hours. The Abbey is next door. From there the walk climbs gently to the Circus and then to the Royal Crescent, thirty houses in a single sweep facing an open lawn, and there is nowhere in Britain quite like standing at the middle of it. Pulteney Bridge and its weir are a ten-minute walk back down.
Bath is compact enough to explore on foot and hilly enough that you will be grateful for the car by mid-afternoon. Your chauffeur can collect you at the Crescent, run you up to Prior Park for the view back over the city, or take you out to a village pub in the surrounding hills. Lacock and Castle Combe are both within half an hour if you want a second stop on the way home.

Making a Long Western Day Work
Four hours of driving sets the boundary. From London that leaves six or seven hours in and around Bath, which is two hours at the Roman Baths, an hour walking up to the Circus and the Crescent, a proper lunch and one outlying stop. In June the light lasts long enough to add Lacock on the way home. In December it does not, so we start earlier and shorten the afternoon.
The Roman Baths run on timed admission that you book yourself, and the middle of the day is the crush. An early slot lets you walk up through the Georgian streets afterwards in relative quiet; a late one means the climb happens first and you finish underground. Bath's centre is tightly controlled for traffic and its car parks fill, so your chauffeur uses an agreed set-down near the Abbey and holds outside the restricted zone.
The gradient between the Abbey and the Royal Crescent is the part people underestimate; it is about three quarters of a mile and it climbs the whole way. We usually drive up and let you walk down. Rain suits Bath better than most cities, since the Baths, the Abbey and the museums are all indoors. April to June and September are the pick: the stone looks its best in low sun and the streets are bearable. July and August are busy, and hot underground. The Christmas market, through late November and December, transforms the city and fills every hour of it, so an early admission slot becomes essential rather than merely wise. January and February are quiet and often beautiful.
Because this is a long day, it tends to be planned rather than improvised, and three to four weeks of notice is usual. Market weekends and half terms go earliest. If you are considering an overnight instead, say so at the enquiry: the outbound and return legs are quoted separately and the second morning opens up Lacock, Castle Combe and the Cotswold edge.
