A little over two hours west of London puts Bath at the end of a long day, though a rewarding one, and the drive itself counts as part of it: the M4 hands over to the Wiltshire downs, and then to that steep wooded approach into the valley. By car you can take the high road first, for the view right across the rooftops before you drop down. Small thing. Memorable one.
Everything centres on the Roman Baths, and they are worth a couple of hours. The Abbey stands next door. From there the walk rises gently to the Circus, then on to the Royal Crescent, thirty houses in one sweep facing open lawn, and nowhere else in Britain feels quite like standing at the middle of it. Ten minutes back downhill bring you to Pulteney Bridge and its weir.
Compact enough to walk, Bath is also hilly enough that by mid-afternoon you will be glad of the car. Your chauffeur can collect you at the Crescent, run you up to Prior Park for the view back over the city, or carry you out to a village pub in the hills around. Lacock and Castle Combe both lie within half an hour, should you want a second stop on the way home.

Four hours behind the wheel is the boundary. Out of London that leaves six or seven hours in and around Bath: two at the Roman Baths, an hour walking up to the Circus and the Crescent, a proper lunch and one stop further out. June gives you light enough to add Lacock on the way home. December does not, so we start earlier and cut the afternoon short.
Timed admission governs the Roman Baths, booked by you, and the middle of the day is where the crush sits. Take an early slot and you walk up through the Georgian streets afterwards in relative quiet; take a late one and the climb comes first, with the day finishing underground. Traffic control in the centre is tight and the car parks fill, so your chauffeur uses an agreed set-down near the Abbey and holds outside the restricted zone.
What people underestimate is the gradient between the Abbey and the Royal Crescent: three quarters of a mile, climbing the entire way. Our habit is to drive up and let you walk back down. Rain treats Bath more kindly than most cities, given that the Baths, the Abbey and the museums are all under a roof. April to June, plus September, is the pick of it: low sun does the stone every favour and the streets stay bearable. July and August are busy, and underground it gets hot. From late November through December the Christmas market transforms the city and fills every hour of it, which makes an early admission slot essential rather than simply wise. January and February are quiet, and often beautiful.
A day this long tends to get planned rather than improvised, and three to four weeks of notice is the norm here. Market weekends and half terms go earliest of all. Thinking about an overnight instead? Do say so when you enquire, since the outbound and return legs are quoted separately, and having that second morning opens up Lacock, Castle Combe and the Cotswold edge.
