No correct Cotswolds itinerary exists, and whoever claims otherwise is selling you a coach seat. What the region amounts to is a loose scatter of villages built from one golden limestone, joined by lanes far too narrow and too pretty to rush. Days here work best when the route stays a suggestion: four or five villages, a good lunch, and the freedom to pull over because a view has appeared over a hedge.
Burford is where most days come in, its high street falling away downhill towards a bridge, and arguably the finest single street anywhere in the region. Bibury follows next, with Arlington Row's weavers' cottages, and then the Slaughters, Upper and Lower, a mile apart along a stream and quieter by far than anything near them. Busier Bourton-on-the-Water wants taking early or late. High on the wold sits Stow-on-the-Wold, with its market square and good antiques.
Grander things wait in the northern Cotswolds. Broadway has a wide green high street with a folly tower on the escarpment above it, and the views from there are said to reach thirteen counties. Chipping Campden and Snowshill lie close by. Lunch anchors everything, so do book something proper, a village inn, a farm shop kitchen, a country house dining room, and let the morning route be built to reach it.
One honest note. The car and the chauffeur are what we provide, not commentary. Yours drives professionally rather than guiding under licence, and although they will know these roads intimately, narration is not part of it. Restaurant bookings and any admissions you arrange yourselves, though we will gladly advise on driving times between villages so lunch does not slip away. On single-track roads and unmade drives a Range Rover or a V-Class sits far better than a low saloon, and never more so than between October and March. Staying overnight at a country house? Reading a Day Across the Wolds
Each hop between villages is short; the total is anything but. Burford to Bibury is half an hour, Bibury to the Slaughters another thirty minutes, and the northern villages add an hour on top of that. Out of London you spend three hours on the road before the day has even started, which makes four or five villages plus lunch the honest ceiling. Push for seven and what you remember will be car parks, not places.
Put a house or a garden into the day, Chedworth, Snowshill, Hidcote, Sudeley, and admission becomes timed, arranged by you, and frequently the one fixed point in an otherwise free-form itinerary. Send that slot across and the village order rearranges itself around it. Lunch is your other anchor: book it, then tell us where. Parking in village centres is next to nonexistent, so set-down and collection points get agreed beforehand rather than hunted for on arrival.
Walking here is gentle and optional. Most villages measure a flat half mile end to end, although Arlington Row and the Slaughters bring unmade paths that turn to mud once rain has been through. A wet day simply moves indoors, into a farm shop kitchen, an antiques dealer or a long lunch, and very little is lost by it. Given two days we would give the south to one and the north to the other. Your chauffeur drives, and nothing else; a qualified guide is a separate arrangement, one we are glad to make.

Which Season to Choose
Blossom, long evenings and gardens at full stretch: that is May and June. September and October hand you harvest light and thinner crowds, and those are the months we would pick for ourselves. High summer is lovely, though Bibury and Bourton fill by ten, so both go early or late in the day. Winter empties the villages altogether and the pubs light their fires, which makes an argument of its own.
Hardest of all to secure are Saturdays between May and September, with the larger vehicles going first, so a month's notice makes sense. Touring on a weekday is easier and a good deal more pleasant. Taking two days with a night at a country house? Book the hotel before you book us, because the drive plan follows the bed and not the reverse.
