The old centre of Oxford is small, dense and almost entirely on foot, which is exactly why a car and chauffeur are worth having. You are set down on Broad Street in the morning, you walk the quarter mile of honey-coloured stone between the Sheldonian, the Bodleian and the Radcliffe Camera, and when you have had enough of cobbles the car appears somewhere sensible and takes you on.
Christ Church is usually the fixed point of the day: the largest of the colleges, its hall familiar to anyone who has seen a certain series of films, and its meadow the best half hour of green in the city. Magdalen, at the eastern end of the High, has a deer park and a bridge worth standing on. The Covered Market, tucked behind the High Street, is the right place for an unhurried coffee.
In the afternoon the car changes the day again. Ten minutes north-west is Port Meadow, where the Thames is still narrow and the pubs at Wolvercote and Binsey are the sort you would never reach on foot. Twenty minutes further sits Blenheim Palace, if you have the appetite. Or turn west and the first Cotswold villages begin within half an hour of the ring road.

Colleges, Cobbles and Realistic Distances
An Oxford day is bounded by opening hours rather than by driving times. Christ Church wants two hours, the Bodleian's guided rooms run to a timetable, and most colleges admit visitors only during set afternoon windows that shrink in term. Buy your admission first — each college sells its own — then tell us the times, and we will thread the walking route between them rather than the other way about.
The historic centre is closed to through traffic for much of the day, so nothing is ever parked at the door. Your chauffeur uses one of the permitted set-down points and holds a few minutes away. Between Broad Street, Christ Church and Magdalen Bridge you will cover roughly two miles on uneven stone, with steps in most quadrangles. Where mobility is limited we build the day around the sites that manage it best.
Rain is not the problem it looks. The libraries, the Ashmolean and the Covered Market absorb a wet morning happily, and the car removes every soaking between them. On a fine afternoon we would push you outwards instead: Port Meadow, Blenheim's park, or a first Cotswold village before the drive home. Your chauffeur will not narrate any of it — that is not their licence — but a qualified guide can travel with you throughout.

Term, Vacation and Weather
The academic calendar shapes everything. During full term the colleges are alive but access narrows; in the long vacation more doors open and the city fills with summer schools instead. Late April and early October give you working colleges, mild weather and manageable crowds. Between November and February the light fails by four, so we bring the outdoor stops forward and keep the interiors for later.
Graduation weekends, the summer months and half terms are the busy periods and they book out early, particularly for the larger vehicles. Three to four weeks ahead is sensible; for a ceremony date, considerably more. Midweek in the shoulder seasons is often available at shorter notice. Send the date and the outline and we will tell you plainly what can be done.

Oxford is slightly closer, larger and easier to combine with Blenheim and the Cotswolds. Cambridge is quieter, more compact and better for the river. If you have one day and want countryside too, Oxford usually wins.
