Oxford's old centre is small, dense and almost entirely walked, which is precisely why a car and chauffeur earn their keep. You step out on Broad Street in the morning. Then comes the quarter mile of honey-coloured stone between the Sheldonian, the Bodleian and the Radcliffe Camera, and once the cobbles have had their turn the car appears somewhere sensible and carries you onward to the next thing.
Christ Church usually anchors the day: largest of the colleges, its hall familiar to anyone who has watched a certain run of films, its meadow the best half hour of green anywhere in the city. Magdalen, down at the eastern end of the High, keeps a deer park and a bridge worth standing on. Behind the High Street sits the Covered Market, and that is the right place for a coffee taken slowly.
Come the afternoon, the car alters the day all over again. Ten minutes north-west lies Port Meadow, the Thames still narrow there, with pubs at Wolvercote and Binsey you would never reach on foot. Twenty minutes further on stands Blenheim Palace, should you have the appetite. Or head west, and the first Cotswold villages arrive within half an hour of the ring road.

Opening hours, not driving times, set the shape of an Oxford day. Christ Church wants two hours of you, the Bodleian's guided rooms run to a timetable, and most colleges let visitors in only during fixed afternoon windows that shrink once term begins. Buy your admission first, since each college sells its own, then send us the times. We thread the walking route between them, rather than the other way about.
For much of the day through traffic simply cannot enter the historic centre, which rules out parking at any door. Instead your chauffeur takes one of the permitted set-down points and holds a few minutes off. Reckon on roughly two miles of walking between Broad Street, Christ Church and Magdalen Bridge, all of it over uneven stone, and there are steps in most quadrangles. If mobility is a concern, the day gets shaped around the sites that cope best with it.
Rain is less of a problem here than it looks. The libraries, the Ashmolean and the Covered Market soak up a wet morning happily, and the car takes every drenching out of the gaps between them. Fine afternoon instead? Then we push you outwards: Port Meadow, Blenheim's park, or a first Cotswold village before the drive home. Your chauffeur will narrate none of it, since that is not what his licence covers, but a qualified guide can travel with you throughout.

Everything here is shaped by the academic calendar. Colleges come alive in full term, though access narrows then; over the long vacation more doors open while summer schools fill the city instead. Late April and early October hand you working colleges, mild weather and crowds you can live with. From November to February the light has gone by four, so the outdoor stops move forward and the interiors keep for later.
Graduation weekends, the summer months and half terms are when it gets busy, and they book out early, the larger vehicles first. Three to four weeks ahead is sensible, and for a ceremony date rather more than that. Shoulder-season midweeks are often available at shorter notice. Send us the date and an outline and you will get a plain answer about what can be done.
