Windsor and the Thames, Chauffeured for the Day

The drive out of London to Windsor takes under an hour on a good morning, and the change is complete: river, parkland, and a castle that has been occupied for nearly a thousand years. Arriving by car means arriving when you choose, which in practice means arriving early, before the coaches, while the Castle Hill is still quiet and the light on the Round Tower is worth stopping for.

Most days begin at the castle itself and give it two or three unhurried hours. Afterwards your chauffeur can take you the short distance to the top of the Long Walk, where the view runs three miles straight back to the castle and is, on a clear day, one of the finest sightlines in England. Windsor Great Park sits behind it, and it is a genuinely lovely thing to be driven slowly through.

Across the footbridge is Eton, whose high street of antiquarian bookshops and small galleries takes half an hour and rewards it. West of Windsor lies Runnymede, the meadow where Magna Carta was sealed, with its memorials set quietly in the grass. Lunch is usually taken by the river, either in Windsor itself or at Bray a few minutes upstream, and your chauffeur will have the car ready when you are.
