On a good morning the run out of London to Windsor takes under an hour, and the change is total: river, parkland, and a castle lived in for nearly a thousand years. Coming by car means coming when you please, which in practice means coming early, ahead of the coaches, while Castle Hill is still quiet and the light on the Round Tower is worth pulling over for.
Most days open at the castle and give it two or three unhurried hours. Afterwards your chauffeur runs you the short distance to the top of the Long Walk, where the view stretches three miles dead straight back to the castle and, on a clear day, counts among the finest sightlines in England. Behind it lies Windsor Great Park, and being driven slowly through that is a genuinely lovely thing.
Over the footbridge sits Eton, its high street of antiquarian bookshops and small galleries worth the half hour it takes. West of Windsor is Runnymede, the meadow where Magna Carta was sealed, memorials set quietly into the grass. Lunch tends to happen by the river, either in Windsor itself or at Bray a few minutes upstream, and your chauffeur will have the car ready the moment you are.

Fitting Windsor into the Daylight
Neatly, Windsor divides itself up. Give the castle two to three hours. Forty minutes goes at the top of the Long Walk, half an hour in Eton, twenty minutes at Runnymede, and then a proper lunch. Put together, that is a comfortable half day with lunch on top, or an unhurried full one once the Savill Garden or a second town is added. Push Oxford into the same day and something has to be rushed, and we will say as much before you book.
Entry to the castle works on timed slots which you buy yourself, and the earliest one of the morning is worth chasing. Everything else hangs off that time. Take the opening slot and your afternoon stays free for the Great Park; take a midday one and Eton and Runnymede get pushed into the fading light. Streets in central Windsor are restricted and the car parks are busy, so your chauffeur sets you down close to the gate and then waits somewhere clear of the congestion.
Cobbles cover most of the castle route, and there is a climb up to the State Apartments, which matters if anybody in the party is unsteady on their feet. At Runnymede the memorials sit up a grass slope. When the weather turns, the interiors carry the day and the Long Walk waits for another visit. Your chauffeur drives; he gives no commentary inside the grounds. A qualified guide can join you for the day if you ask.

When Windsor Is Best
Late spring and early autumn suit Windsor best, with the Great Park at its most photogenic and the queues not yet formed. Summer means school holidays and coach parties, which argues for a nine o'clock slot rather than a different month altogether. Winter afternoons shut down fast, so we trim the outdoor half of the day and give the extra time to the interiors.
Ascot race meetings, ceremonial occasions, the weeks in which parts of the castle shut for state use: any of these will turn Windsor into a different town for the day. So consult the castle's own calendar before fixing a thing. Two weeks' notice normally gets you the car and the chauffeur you had in mind. Bank holidays and summer weekends need more than that, and when you enquire, do tell us your admission time.
